Diagnose
Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD as it is most commonly referred to, affects the jaw and can lead to persistent tension headaches in some patients. Most often described as a deep ache in the muscles surrounding the jaw area, it is sometimes accompanied by the sound of popping when opening or closing the mouth, and eating. We do not know exactly what causes either TMD or migraines, but they can both cause persistent, sometimes debilitating pain. TMD and the associated teeth grinding can also significantly compromise the teeth – wearing them down and causing pain and sensitivity.
Treat
Botulinum toxin can be used successfully to treat migraines and jaw pain associated with TMD. When used for migraines, the Botox blocks the release of the chemicals during pain transmission, so we can either stop the migraine altogether or reduce the levels of pain. When treating TMD, Dr Imogen applies botulinum toxin to the masseter muscle (this connects the lower jaw and the cheekbone) to soften the jaw muscles stop them from holding tension and stopping teeth grinding.
Relieve
Many patients report experiencing great pain relief after treating their migraines or TMD with Botox. While the treatment may not remove the pain completely, it can greatly reduce it. To stay as pain-free as possible, Dr Imogen recommends getting the treatment at least twice per year
